Measuring For Bar Stools
Height
If you're thinking of getting some bar stools for your kitchen or home bar, bear in mind that they come in different heights. You'll need to make sure you measure the height of whatever surface you want to use the stools at before you buythe stools. The golden rule when choosing bar stools is to check the space from the top of the seats to the underside of your bar or worktop is big enough for peoples' legs! At the same time, this gap shouldn't be too large, as you don't want the seats to be too low. A handy tip to remember is to aim for a gap of 10-13 inches. Here's a quick guide to the different height stools commonly available:
Counter Height - Counter stools typically have heights of 24-26 inches, as kitchen islands, worktops and breakfast bars are usually 35-37 inches tall.
Bar Height Stools - These are for use at bars that are higher than kitchen worktops, at 40-42 inches tall. Their seats are 28-30 inches high.
Extra Tall - Extra tall bar stools have seat heights of 32-35 inches and, as the name suggests, are for extra tall bars that are 45-48 inches tall.
Spacing
One last thing to consider when buying bar stools is how many you should get. Ideally you want to have enough seats for everyone in your household, plus maybe a couple extra for guests. However, you don't want so many stools that they feel cramped together, and this depends on the space available. As a guide, try to leave a distance of 26-30 inches between the middle of each seat and the next. This should be a comfortable spacing, allowing enough space for people to get on and off the stools without bumping into each other.Simon Phillips
